iPhone Audio Recording
How to get long, reasonable high quality audio recordings with an iPhone.
Apps
There are tons of apps but iTalk is the best for long recordings and well worth $2. You can transfer audio files to your computer via a shared Wi-Fi connection using iTalkSync. I couldn’t get auto-syncing to work and had to manually enter my iPhone’s IP address by going to Settings --> Wi-Fi Networks --> More --> (see the img below)
Accessories
I then spent 15 bucks to compare a few accessories. All of these were recorded in a regular bedroom with plaster walls. I let the Apple Headset dangle normally at my chest and held the other 3 mics about 2” from the side of my mouth. Listen to the results below. And here’s a little more info on the accessories.
Built-in: No accessories here…just using the built-in mic.
Apple Headset ($29): This is the headset that comes with the phone. Completely respectable quality for a hands free device but clearly not the best option for recordings.
Mini Mic ($1.24): Pretty incredible that the shipping costs more than the product, but lots of crackling.
Brando Flex ($14): By far the best and fullest sound, though could use some noise reduction. See a more thorough review here.
